Phenomenology of self-interacting WIMPs

The observed dark matter relic abundance and the idea of thermal freeze-out motivate dark matter particles with weak-scale interactions (so-called WIMPs). On the other hand, discrepancies between numerical simulations and observations on galactic scales prefer models in which dark matter particles have rather strong self-interactions. In my talk I will discuss how to combine these two classes of dark matter models by considering dark matter particles interacting via a new light mediator. I will introduce different types of mediators and discuss the relevant observational and experimental constraints. While the simplest realizations of this set-up are strongly constrained, a number of possible modifications open up a range of interesting possibilities.
